Starting an entirely new LEGO company—doing technological research and development, employing new people and buying machines and tools—was an immense challenge for the newly minted MBA graduate. The twenty-five-year-old director was still very green, and suddenly he was sitting at the head of the table, chairing meetings in German and English in front of much older, more seasoned executives.

Kjeld: I was conscious of my age in the sense that I listened a lot to what other people said and thought. That meant the meetings did sometimes run on, because I wanted to find a broad-brush consensus. I had learned that from my time at the IMD, where we discussed things a lot, and for a long time. I also brought that habit home to Billund, to the displeasure of some coworkers, who thought we spent too much time in meetings. As one of them said, “You’re really keen for us to agree as much as conceivably possible, aren’t you?” And another one said I was “much too inspired by the Japanese on that issue.” There was probably some truth to it.
